Dr Jo De Baerdemaeker is an independent Belgian typeface designer and researcher. He holds an MA in Typeface Design and was awarded a PhD from the University of Reading. His interests are designing, researching and writing about world script typefaces (particularly on Tibetan, Mongolian, Lantsa and Javanese) and multilingual typography. He received an early career fellowship from The Leverhulme Trust for the two-year postdoctoral research project on “Mongolian script: from metal type to digital font”, which he undertook at the University of Reading from 2011–2013.
He is elected board member and the ATypI Country Delegate for Belgium, and currently teaches at LUCA School of Arts (campus Sint-Lukas Brussels), at the Plantin Institute of Typography (Antwerp), and at the European Lettering Institute (Bruges).
In 2012, Jo De Baerdemaeker founded Studio Type in Antwerp (Belgium), and collaborates with international design studio’s and type foundries. He was the external examiner for the TypeMedia 2014 department at KABK in Den Haag.
